Year 3 Curriculum

English

English skills are used in all of our subjects and so we practice many of these skills every day through handwriting, reading, writing and spelling.

This term we will be working towards planning and writing our own return narrative and letter based on our class book ‘Jemmy Button by Alix Barzelay’. We will analyse the pictures to explore expanded noun phrases, prepositional language and adverbials. We will analyse the text to explore direct speech which is indicated by the use of inverted commas. We will then duplicate this in our own writing. We will also discuss the historical focus of this book.

We have a big focus on reading in Year 3, through daily whole class reading sessions. We focus on vocabulary, inference, prediction, explaining, retrieving, sequencing and summarising skills. We would ask that you support your child at home by reading their own book or class book with them each night for just 10 minutes and signing their reading log so they can earn dojo points and rewards.

We will read return narratives as our class novel such as Alice in Wonderland and The Chronicles of Narnia.

Maths

This term, we will focus on applying multiplication and division in through money; using a variety of methods and resources to support (base 10, number lines and place value counters). We will also look at applying this to our unit of measure and begin to look at fractions.

We also focus on basic skills in Maths continually throughout the year; including:

  • Developing our times tables knowledge (2’s, 5’s, 10s, 3s, 4s, 6s and 8s)
  • Applying the knowledge to solve a range of problems throughout our units.

Across the Curriculum

We have covered so much in Year 3 already and can’t wait to get stuck onto even more exciting topics this term! We will be learning about Light in Science. In Geography we are comparing human and physical features of Mediterranean islands and locate these on a map using a four-point compass reference. In DT we will be exploring our cooking skills and making Mediterranean pizzas! YUM!  In Computing the children will be exploring and experiencing VR reality by exploring the Rainforest. In music we will be further developing our Glockenspiel skills to play a simple tune. In RE we will discuss the Easter Story and symbolism of Hope. In PSHE we will discuss being safe and healthy. In PE we will be developing our athletic skills, in the long jump, throwing and hurdles.
