Year 1 Curriculum

English

English skills are used in all of our subjects and so we practice many of these skills every day through handwriting, reading, writing and spelling.

This half term we will be consolidating basic sentence structure, ensuring that children are remembering to:

*Use finger spaces

*Include correct punctuation

*Use correct letter formation

*Sitting letters on the line

We will also be introducing different sentence types to the children, encouraging them to use a range of punctuation within these sentences. To further improve the quality of our sentences, children should be starting to use conjunctions to extend their sentences.

We have a big focus on reading in Year 1 and we have recently started daily phonics sessions, following the ‘Read Write Inc’ scheme. Phonics lessons are an hour long daily and children get a lot of opportunity to read during these lessons. We would ask that you further support your child at home by reading with them each night for just 10 minutes and signing their reading log so they can earn dojo points and rewards.

Maths

This half term we will be focussing on addition and subtraction within 20 and comparing and ordering numbers up to 50.

We will also be practising our basic skills:

*Counting forwards and backwards up to and beyond 100

*Counting in 2s, 5s and 10s

*Working on rapid recall of number bonds

Across the Curriculum

We have covered so much in Year 1 already and we can’t wait to get stuck into even more exciting topics this half term! In our science lessons we will be learning about animals (including humans); identifying and naming a variety of common animals and learning about their diet. In our geography lessons we are going to be looking at the UK within the world, we will have lots of fun including looking at countries and capital cities using maps, atlases and globes. In our DT lessons we will be identifying different fruits and where they come from, as well as designing and creating our own healthy and delicious fruit salad. In RE lessons, we will be reading the Easter story and learning about the significance of Palm Sunday. Our PE focus this half term will be fundamental games; improving and developing accuracy with underarm rolling and throwing and catching balls with more consistency. Our PSHE theme is ‘Healthy Me’, we will be identifying a range of ways to keep safe and healthy. Our computing focus is to learn skills, tips and tricks on a computer and IPad and to begin to use technology to classify information.
