History Intent

At Rice Lane our intent is that our teaching of History will help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. The history curriculum at Rice Lane makes full use of resources within the immediate and wider local area enabling children to develop a deep understanding of the rich history of their locality. We aim to enable children to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments and develop perspective and judgement. Through the teaching of History, we endeavour to teach children to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.

History topics are informed by the national curriculum and are sensitive to children’s interests, as well as the context of the local area. The history curriculum at Rice Lane is carefully planned and sequenced to ensure that current learning is linked to previous learning and that the school’s approaches are informed by current pedagogy. It is constructed around core concepts and with specific end points to ensure children build a coherent view of the development of history over time. We shall ensure the History curriculum is accessible to all and that any gaps caused by the impact of Covid are addressed and children remain fully engaged and build knowledge and skills over time.

An outstanding history pupil needs:

  • To be curious about wanting to know more about the past.
  • To be able to ask questions that are insightful and historically valid.
  • To be critical thinkers when weighing evidence and sifting arguments to develop their own perspective and judgement.
  • To have a good understanding of chronology.
  • To have a good understanding of the different methods of historical enquiry.
  • To be able to make connections across historical periods and explain how the past shapes the present.
  • To be able to be a good communicator, who can work with others to tackle some of history’s big questions.
