Oak

Welcome to Oak’s class page! Here you will find lots of information about what we are doing in class and helpful information.

We have been doing lots of work surrounding our emotions using the Zones of Regulation. We play games, read stories and have lots of fun talking about and even acting out our different emotions.

Curriculum Overview

English

English skills are used in all our subjects and so we practice these skills every week through handwriting, reading, oracy, writing and spelling.

This half term we will study ‘The Lost Happy Endings’ by Carol Ann Duffy. We will be writing a twisted tale based on a traditional story. There will be many opportunities for incidental writing where the children can practice their grammar skills, including use of similes and metaphors, expanded noun phrases and apostrophises for possession.

Reading remains an integral part of the curriculum. Your child will have either 4 sessions of Bug club reading a week or Read Write Inc sessions, depending on their needs, In all of these activities, the children focus on comprehension skills alongside accuracy of reading and fluently. Children have regular reading sessions individually with a member of staff. All children will benefit from reading at home. We would therefore ask that you support your child at home by reading with them each night for just 10 minutes and signing their reading log so they can earn dojo points and rewards.

Maths

This term, we will focus on multiplication and division; identifying a range of strategies for calculating and problem solving. We will use a variety of methods resources to support us (multiplication squares, base 10 and part whole models, to name a few). We will also look at applying this to our unit of measure when working out the area of a shape.

We will also begin to look at fractions and how we can add and subtract them. We will then relate this knowledge into learning about decimals and how the two can be linked.

We also focus on basic skills in Maths continually throughout the year; including:

  • Developing our times tables knowledge (2’s up to 12’s)
  • Regular practise of calculation across the four operations.

Across the Curriculum

We can’t wait to get stuck onto even more exciting topics this term! We are currently looking at Electricity in our Science topic and we will be using the skills and knowledge we learn in science to develop an electrical light box in our DT work. In Geography we are going to be looking at global trade and energy. We will be looking further into the different types of energy that we create and how this effects trade across the globe. In Computing, the children will be looking at creating their own basic film, looking specifically at filming techniques and editing. Further on in the term we will be moving on to look at creating a digital book based on the Harry Potter series.

In PE we will be developing our athletic skills, in the long jump, throwing and hurdles. In our PSHE lessons are looking at how to keep our body and mind healthy.  We are looking at what part exercise, diet and mindfulness play in keeping us healthy, as well as how to keep safe.

In Rice Lane Primary School and Nursery we aim for the children to become resilient, confident, creative and independent  learners.
