Nursery

Welcome to the Nursery class page. At Rice Lane Primary School and Nursery, we strongly believe that Early Years foundation Stage is crucial to develop strong foundations to be built upon as the children continue their learning journey throughout our school. It is our strong belief that children who enter our nursery develop emotionally, creatively, verbally and intellectually. In Nursery we aim to build the foundations and encourage and embed a positive attitude to learning. We believe that Nursery is the beginning of their learning journey and we want to make it a wonderful experience for your child and support them in reaching their full potential.

Curriculum

In Nursery our curriculum will be guided by the Development Matters, the non-statutory curriculum guidance for the early years. Development Matters sets out the learning, development and assessment required for the Early Years, until the end of your child’s Reception year.

We follow the seven areas of learning, they are split into 3 prime areas and 4 specific areas.

The prime areas are the bedrock of our nursery and interlink with the specific areas of learning.

The prime areas are:

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Communication and Language

Physical development

The Specific areas are:

Literacy

Mathematics

Understanding the World

Expressive Arts

These areas of development are explored and promoted in everything you child will do.

At the core of the EYFS Curriculum is the “Characteristics of Effective Teaching and Learning”

They are:

  • Playing and exploring- children investigate and experience things, and have a go
  • Active learning- children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties, and enjoy achievements
  • Creating and thinking critically- children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas, and develop strategies for doing things.

Statutory framework for EYFS

In our Nursery we offer a stimulating and secure environment, both indoors and outdoors where children feel comfortable and confident to try new things. We set up our environment to be both stimulating and exciting, and relevant to the needs of our children. The environment plays a big part in their learning journey and will often be set up linked to the interests of the child. The environment is changed as your child grows and develops. Our philosophy of early years education is play and the importance of it, it is at the heart of everything we plan for our children. The practitioners will engage in the child’s play and move them on to their next step. Our children will also work within groups or through whole class teaching, depending on the needs of the children. The environment is set out so resources are attainable for our children, this is to promote independence. We will also use see- saw a learning journey and observation tool. We constantly carry out observations on our children and this will inform us of their next steps.

“Play is not a break from learning. It is endless, delightful, deep, engaging, practical learning. It’s the doorway into the child’s heart” – Vince Gowman

In Rice Lane Primary School and Nursery we aim for the children to become resilient, confident, creative and independent little learners.
