Amazing Cup victory for the Y5/6 Girls’ Football Team
Another North Cup win for Rice Lane. The boys’ team has won the cup for the last 2 years and this year the girls’ team came back with the cup with the boys unfortunately being beaten in this year’s final.
We arrived at the venue in South Liverpool, Camp Hill (thanks for the lift Mrs Chatburn) in the pouring rain, which stayed with us for the whole of the match. However, a bit of rain was not going to put this team off. We were not the favourites to win as they had beaten us 3-1 earlier in the season, St Teresa of Lisieux were very strong opponents. However, we quickly took a 1-0 lead as they scored an own goal and then went 2-0 ahead through a great free kick from Anna. We then had plenty of other chances and could have gone in at half time with a bigger lead.
The second half was different however and St Teresa’s showed what a good side they were, scoring one goal and then equalising just before the end. So extra time ... in the pouring rain! You might have thought the girls would be down, tired and very wet. The last bit was true but this is a real team; they support each other, have a growth mindset (they believe they CAN do it) and never give up. With a few minutes to go, a great move and Anna passed the ball to Ruby who scored a great winner.
Thanks to the girls for a great Tuesday night, thanks to the girls who didn’t make the actual team but have played and trained this season and shown a great attitude and thanks to the wonderful support from the parents. Well done!
